As each day of the Beijing Olympics continues, I hear new, disturbing stories of China's totalitarian, oppressive regime. Why does this not sicken anyone else? Why doesn't the news report it? I just watched rhythmic gymnastics, and I'm awed by the artistry, but then I see the red China flags and can't even enjoy what I'm watching because I think of all the atrocities going on underneath the facade. Because as I watched the games, I was also browsing the NY Times and found this lovely article:
Too Old and Frail to Re-educate? Not in China
Yeah that's right, 2 little old ladies, 77 and 79 years old, sentenced to labor for protesting the government not compensating them fairly when their homes were seized for redevelopment. The best part: they were in a government sanctioned area of protest. But oh no, that does not stop China.
Is this what we want to praise? Is this the way we want the world to go?

more reason for me to not watch the Olympics
China is reneging on their promises - surprised? No.
Just more reason for me to not watch the Olympics this year. I don't understand why our country isn't boycotting this. Oh wait...maybe it's because China owns so much of the United States? I don't know :( But how can you support a Communist country who wants to restrict the press coverage of the event?
My favorite is the quote at the end of the article, where a reporter from Communist Cuba is even surprised at how controlling China is being:
Cuban reporter Joel Garcia Leon, with the magazine Trabajadores, said he expected the censorship. But he was overwhelmed by other red tape.
"I'm surprised how tightly controlled and complicated everything is here," he said. "To get a phone number from China Mobile, I have to give them a copy of my passport and my mother's maiden name. This seems quite excessive and abnormal."

race results
Results from Charles Harris are in...don't worry about looking up mine ;) Nothing worth talking about! haha
But my friend Sammy turned out to be 5th place with a time of 31:57. Sick!
But I of course googled him...here is what he looks like, and he may live in Marietta now, but it also seems like he spent some time in the A-U-G - small world! Also may be an Olympic hopeful...
